Outreach Ministries at Redeemer
Part of being a 'church' is being sent by God out into the world, loving and serving our neighbors. Our outreach ministries range from maintaining a community garden that provides produce for our neighborhood to serving with Lutheran Social Services of Central Ohio. Below is an overview of Redeemer's ministries that serve our neighborhood and community.
Serving Dinners at First English
Redeemer partners with First English Lutheran Church, located in an impoverished eastside neighborhood, to provide financial assistance and to help serve a weekly community meal.
Partnering with First English allows Redeemer to spread its outreach beyond its own neighborhood, into the wider community.
Lutheran Social Services (LSS) Food Pantry
We organize teams that work in the LSS food pantry on Champion Avenue on Columbus's east side. Redeemer members also donate food and plastic bags to LSS, which are then provided for those who use the services of LSS and the food pantry.
Redeemer Garden Give-a-Way
Volunteers pick produce from the Redeemer Community Garden and then give it away to anyone who stops by. These give-a-ways are held every Saturday morning from 10-12 at Redeemer from June through September.
LSS and MidOhio Food Bank Produce Give-a-Way
Every month, 15 to 20 Redeemer volunteers hand out fresh produce, bread, and dessert items, all provided by the MidOhio Food Bank and Lutheran Social Services. These give-a-ways are held the third Thursday of each month, from April through October, and anyone in the community is welcome to show up and receive food.
Lutheran World Relief (LWR) “Alternative Christmas”
Redeemer provides “alternative gifts” for the Christmas season that support those living in poverty around the world. Typically these include ELCA Good Gifts, gifts to LSS Food Pantry, and olive oil from the Mount of Olives.
Redeemer Basketball Camp
During the summer months, we provide a 6-week evening basketball camp, free of charge, for area youth. The camp is led by former ABA and NBA player Larry Jones, with assistance from Redeemer members and other local basketball coaches. The camp is one of the many ways that Redeemer serves our community.
Good Neighbors Picnic
Founded in 1999 by Redeemer member William McCulley, the Good Neighbors Picnic is an annual event aimed at uplifting the homeless community, with involvement of many people with various backgrounds. Redeemer actively participates in this annual community picnic, held in Goodale Park in downtown Columbus. goodneighborspicnic.org
Vacation Bible School
Each year Redeemer holds Vacation Bible School, serving children from preschool age through middle school. Dinner is provided, as well as many fun evening activities, from games and crafts to singing and learning. VBS is always free and open to anyone in the community.
